Identity Theft - Junk Mail
Excerpt from Identity Theft, A Resource Guide
Eliminate unwanted credit card offers – You probably think those unsolicited credit card offers you receive regularly in the mail are just a nuisance, but they're more than that. Those offers can be used to open new credit card accounts in your name without your knowledge if they fall into the wrong hands. To prevent that from happening, you should shred all of the offers you receive before they are discarded. You should also call 1-888-567-8688 or visit http://www.optoutprescreen.com to opt-out of the credit card offer mailing list. You see, the three major credit reporting agencies distribute your name to those credit card companies unless you specify that you do not want them to by calling that number. You can also write to each of the three agencies, but your request may take longer to be processed.
