All link approvals are at the sole discretion of the site manager. There are no hard fast rules as to what we will and what we will not link to and the decision is largely discretionary.
The short answer is if you are asking us to link to a useless site and/or offering a link from a useless page the answer is probably no.
Basically, we look to see if the link you are suggesting has sufficient value to us, our audience and the site we are linking to. If you are offering a link back in exchange this increases the value to us and our audience as it makes it easier for our audience to find us.
There are several places we can link out from:
- Our Home Page: http://www.PCSecurityNews.com (Google PR 5)
- Our Useful Links: http://www.PCSecurityNews.com/links.html (Google PR 4)
- Our Linking Directory: http://www.PCSecurityNews.com/links/ (Google PR 0-4)
- Our News Stories and FAQ: http://www.PCSecurityNews.com/news/ (Google PR 0-4)
The home page currently gets between 5,000 and 10,000 visitors a day.
The first step in obtaining a link from our site is to submit to our Linking Directory for approval. Once approved, if you think you have a justifiable reason for requesting a link from one of our other pages, send an email to links@PCSecurityNews.com with your request.
Here are some common things we consider for acceptance in our Linking Directory
If you are suggesting a link without offering a link back:
- we will review this based on the perceived value of the link to our audience.
If you are suggesting a link exchange (back from the site you are suggesting we link to):
- Is the page where our link will be located easily found from the page you are asking us to link to and generally no more than two clicks away.
- Is the content, presentation and subject matter such that we feel some of our visitors will see value in.
- Although we do not link specifically for SEO purposes, we do consider the value of helping visitors find our site through increased search engine relevance. Generally, we look to see if the Google Page Rank of the page where our link will be found is at least one less than the page you are suggesting we link from.
To avoid linking to sites which will hurt us with respect to SEO, we generally do not link to pages unless the page you are asking us to link to is greater than PR 1.
If you are suggesting a triangle link (to one site and back from another):
- Is the page where our link will be located easily found from the home page of the site you are linking back from and generally no more than two clicks away.
- Does the home page of the site you are linking back from have an Alexa Rank of less than 200,000 and a Google PR greater than one less than our home page.
- Is the content, presentation and subject matter such that we feel some of our visitors will see value in.
Common sense can be a good guide. If in doubt, go ahead and ask but if your site is not something I would want my mother to see, the answer will probably be no.
