A new worm, dubbed Sober, is spreading itself through email. It tempts users to open an attachment by claiming that it is a virus fix. We caution our users to NEVER open an email attachment unless it is an expected file sent by a trusted source. In light of its many security woes over the past months, Microsoft recently disclosed several new initiatives meant to improve security in its products. The most important change includes releasing security updates monthly rather than weekly. A proposed class action lawsuit against Microsoft was filed Sept. 30 in the Los Angeles Superior Court. This lawsuit claims the following:
- Microsoft.s monopoly in the OS market has become a “global security risk” because the “world’s computer networks are now susceptible to massive, cascading failure”
- Microsoft’s security warnings are too difficult to understand for most people and result in giving hackers the info they need to exploit newly discovered flaws
- Microsoft has participated in unfair competition and deceptive business practices
- Microsoft has violated two consumer rights laws in California, including one that protects the privacy of personal information in computer databases

For those of us who do what we’re supposed to — use passwords that are random combinations of letters, numbers and symbols, change them frequently, and use a different password for each service requiring a password — it is almost completely impossible to remember them all, and most of us end up writing them down (and I don’t need to tell you that writing down passwords is a big security no-no).
