Computer security firm, Sophos, estimates that the Sober computer worm has a share of more than 5 percent of all e-mails sent worldwide. In early May, the Sober-N worm infected thousands of computers by pretending as a medium to get tickets for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The first Sober worm was seen in October 2003. Forrester Research estimates that about 2.3 billion spam messages are sent each day and Radicati Group says that junk messages represent about 45% of all e-mails sent daily. Radicati Group further projects that this number is expected to grow to 70% by 2007. Read the rest of this entry »

When I was a kid, I only had one problem on Valentine’s Day: how many Barbie? Valentine cards would I have to buy to have enough for all my friends? Today, however, the world is a little more complicated. Valentine’s Day doesn’t seem to have that luster anymore (and not just because I couldn’t find a date). There’s just too much to worry about to observe a day of love, the wounded economy, suicide bombers killing our soldiers, and petty mudslinging by presidential candidates, to name a few. I opened my email account last night to find I had 282 new messages. 281 of these promised me happiness by way of smaller thighs, larger unnamed appendages, lower mortgages, and higher salaries. The only message I wanted to read was buried somewhere between the new Hollywood Diet and my personal invitation to set myself up on a blind date (as if the world needed one more blind date). Mimail.S displays a fake Microsoft licensing window to try and dupe users into entering their credit card information. The stolen information is then e-mailed to addresses found within the worm’s code. Like previous Mimail variants, it spreads itself via e-mail. Read the rest of this entry »
